With Good Friday upon us, it is the perfect time to be meditating upon the Stations of the Cross. There are many wonderful meditations available. Here are five suggestions:
Way of the Cross at the Colosseum by Msgr Renato Corti, 2015
These meditations will be used at the Colosseum this year for the liturgy to be presided over by Pope Francis. They refer to the gift of our being protected by God’s love, and our resultant call, in love, to be protectors. We are called to protect other people, especially of the poor, of ourselves and our families, and also of creation.
Way of the Cross with the modern martyrs by Tom Hoopes, 2015
This year, we have heard so many stories about those suffering persecution for their faith. In these meditations on the Way of the Cross, Tom Hoopes invites us to pray with and for martyrs of our time.
Way of the Cross at the Colosseum by Cardinal Ratzinger, 2005
Just before he was elected to the Papacy as Pope Benedict XVI, Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger penned the meditations for the Way of the Cross at the Colosseum on Good Friday, 2005. He also led the Way of the Cross that year, as an ailing Pope John Paul II participated via video link.
The meditations are profound, and speak to us not only of the Way of the Cross 2000 years ago, but how the same woundings of Christ’s body occur today.
Way of the Cross with Mary by Fr Richard G. Furey CSSR, 1984
Another popular devotion is meditating upon the Stations of the Cross from the perspective of the Blessed Mother. Some of the meditations are better than others, but I think the one written by Fr Richard G. Furey, CSsR, is particularly poignant. Through following the reaction of the Mother of Christ to His suffering, the meditation invites us to examine our own reaction to His Passion.
Everyman’s Way of the Cross by Clarence Enzler
These meditations are written from the perspective of Jesus. He refers to us, those meditating upon the Way of the Cross, as “My Other Self”. In these meditations, a question is posed by Christ and a suggested response is given.
